Spirulina, the perfect protein!
I’m a vegetarian and a triathlete, so I really pay attention to the protein in eat everyday.
When I changed my diet to vegetarian about 12 years ago, I had no clue how to get the right volume and quality of protein I needed. So I turned to the easiest solution I knew: meat substitutes. Veggies paddies, veggies burgers, tofu, texturized vegetable protein, etc. But the costs of all these processes food were pretty high AND not that healthy. I now have learned that I need to read all the ingredients on the packaging very carefully and as much as I can avoid any process food. But that’s a different story… and probably a good topic for an entire different website…
Today, when it comes to my choice of protein, I now better… I have spirulina everyday, because I know that spirulina is a FANTASTIC, easily assimilable, source of protein! A protein that is biologically complete, which means it provides all the eight essential amino acids (Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophane and Valine) in the proper ratios and 10 of the 12 non essentials amino acids (Alanine, Arginine, Aspartic Acid, Cystine, Glutamic Acid, Glycine, Histidine, Proline, Serine, Tyrosine). Most plant foods are not complete proteins because they usually lack one or more amino acids. So spirulina really rocks!
And I’m not the only one saying it: Several studies showed that spirulina is a superior protein for athletes (and for everyone else!).
Unlike all the vegetables or other microorganisms proposed as protein sources, spirulina cells do not have cellulose walls, but a relatively fragile envelope of murein (Polysacharride). This explains the very high digestibility of its proteins (83-90% in ordinary dried spirulina). Thus spirulina requires no cooking or special treatment to increase the availability of its proteins.
So go ahead, try one of these recipes to start using spirulina TODAY and see the difference for yourself! But don’t forget that all spirulina are not created equal and make sure you pick right the spirulina that will bring you the most benefits and the one that will agree with your taste buds! And if you don’t feel like cooking, don’t panic… There are already on the market a lot of very yummy product that contains spirulina, are healthy and yummy!
